Connecticut's Assets-Based Character Education Conference

Jan Nigro and the Vitamin L Chorus used music to teach character during a conference workshop last year.

More than 500 participants attended Connecticut’s third Assets-Based Character Education Conference in 2001. Positive comments about the conference included “Outstanding!” “Excellent to include youth!” “I feel invigorated!” and “Excellent practical activities integrating character education.” On May 2, 2002, The School for Ethical Education is hosting Connecticut’s fourth conference, and this year’s event promises to be equally enriching.

Dr. Eric Schaps, founder and president of the Developmental Studies Center (DSC), will be the keynote speaker. DSC is internationally known for its research-based school and after-school programs. Students who benefited from DSC programs demonstrated improved academic, social, and ethical development. Dr. Schaps will draw from over 20 years of research and work with teachers and students to discuss strategies that promote positive character.

The conference will also include 24 breakout sessions for K-12 educators, administrators, counselors, youth workers, parents, and community youth agencies interested in character development. Three nationally recognized leaders in character education will present workshops in the morning and afternoon sessions: Dr. Philip Vincent, Character Development Group; Chip Wood, Northeast Foundation for Children and the Responsive Classroom; and Larry Dieringer, Educators for Social Responsibility. Register early! Space is limited. We look forward to seeing you on May 2.
