More than 200 character educators were asked to describe the environment of a school known for its excellent character education program. Here are some of their responses:

  • The school prominently displays character education themes on a bulletin board.
  • Consequences for behavior are consistent with building responsibility.
  • Student writings, artwork, and portfolios reflect character education themes and attributes.
  • Staff and students use common character education vocabulary.
  • Students are well-mannered and display ethical behavior.
  • Student service projects reflect collaboration with others in the community and identify service opportunities for others.
  • Each classroom is designed to support collaborative learning among students.
  • Character education resources including books, videos, and music are available in the school library.
