Academic Integrity Project Funded
September 25, 2007
The School for Ethical Education (SEE) of Milford, CT announces the receipt of three-years of funding for a total of $381,000 to support the implementation and evaluation of an academic integrity project in Connecticut high schools. The largest portion of the grant ($320K) was recently approved by the John Templeton Foundation (PA) (www.templeton.org) with supporting funds ($45K) from Richard Davoud Donchian Foundation (CT) and Wright Investors’ Service (CT). The project will support the creation and evaluation of faculty and student committees to promote personal academic responsibility. SEE will be working in collaboration with Dr. Jason Stephens, a past Templeton scholar and currently a faculty member of the Department of Educational Psychology in the Naeg School of Education at the University of Connecticut, Storrs.
The primary purpose of this project seeks to make two important contributions to the research on academic integrity. First, completion of this project will create a better understanding of the process and challenges of working with high school students and faculty to design and implement academic integrity programs in a diverse set of public schools; and second, gather evidence on the effectiveness of these programs in changing students’ perceptions, beliefs and behaviors related to academic dishonesty.
SEE is recruiting schools through the month of October to participate in the three-year project. Recruitment flyers have been distributed to all Connecticut public high schools and follow-up contacts are proceeding to recruit applicants to participate as pilot and control schools. Pilot and matched control schools will receive a small grant to support annual academic integrity survey to be complete by faculty and students. Academic Integrity Surveys will be completed during the month of May. Pilot schools will collaborate with study facilitators to support—
- Formation and monthly meeting of an academic integrity committee for all three years of the project
- Academic integrity committee to include students, faculty, administration
- Administration support to implement academic integrity committee strategic plan in year two and three
