Student Activists for Service Learning

A youth philanthropy board that provides high school students the training and experience to successfully distribute mini-grants in support of service-learning projects in New Haven County.

SASL is a youth leadership opportunity

  • Meet one to two times/month (on Thursdays)
    • Meeting time  3:30 PM to 5:00 PM
    • Location Common Ground High School, New Haven [Directions]
    • Arrange own transportation (travel reimbursement available)
    • Refreshments available at all meetings
    • Volunteer two hours/month to SASL outside of meetings
  • Work with 10 to 18 peers to lead a youth-based grant-making board
  • SASL's mission is to encourage the process of service-learning by providing small grants for service-learning projects in New Haven county schools
  • Goals:
    • Encourage schools to develop service-learning programs
    • Distribute mini-grants for student-led service learning
    • Create and adminster by-laws for youth philanthropy board
    • Review and rank proposals and process funding of applications
    • Recruit additional board members
    • Participate in Connecticut’s Service-Learning Conference in May
Why participate?
  • Gain practical leadership and teamwork experience and complete real tasks

  • Learn about service-learning as a teaching and community building strategy
  • Advance a Youth Board structure for fellow students to build upon in the future
  • Learn and practice strategies for philanthropic giving (grant making)
  • Help your community
  • Gain experience in publishing press releases and disseminating recruitment information
Requirements
  • High school student who can cooperatively work with other students
  • Ability to arrange own transportation to meetings
  • Participate in 90% of Youth Board meetings to earn participant certificate
  • Recommendation from adult sponsor
  • Willingness to complete two to three hours of work outside of Board meetings
