The School for Ethical Education (SEE) is pleased to host two classes in June 2005 as a summer institute for character education and service learning. Educators, parents, and youth leaders for after-school programs and agencies will benefit from each class. These interactive sessions will provide participants the background and hands-on experience to immediately implement research-based character education strategies. This summer institute is a collaborative project of SEE,
A.C.E.S. of Hamden and the University of Bridgeport.
Participants may earn 1.0 CEU credit per class through
A.C.E.S. ($120/class) or 1 graduate credit (additional homework and fees required) through the University of Bridgeport.

Both sessions will be hosted at SEE's classroom in Milford,
Connecticut.

Summer Institute Class I
Developing Character in Students: A Comprehensive Approach
Date: June 27 &
28, 2005
(Monday and Tuesday)
Time: 9:00 am to 2:30 pm with ½ hour for lunch
What: Participants will be introduced to the comprehensive approach to character education as authored by Dr. Thomas
Lickona. Key components will be discussed and modeled and include-establishing a core vocabulary for character education, including instruction for three teaching domains which include-1. head/cognitive, 2. heart/affective, and 3. hand/behavioral, and implementing nine strategies for character education in schools. Strategies for implementing and evaluating a comprehensive character education program will be introduced.

II
Service-Learning: Teaching the Whole
Child
Date: June 29 &
June 30, 2005
(Wednesday and Thursday)
Time: 9:00 am to 2:30 pm with ½ hour for lunch
What: This class is based on the seven years of experience SEE has gained during its administration of
Youth: Ethics in Service. YES is a service-learning program for students in grades 4-12 and is adaptable for use in after-school programs. During this class, service-learning will be defined and participants will practice specific cooperative work skills that support service-learning project design and implementation. Project planning and reflection strategies for students and teachers are introduced and practiced to highlight the goal of student character development. Methods to complete tasks for successful project administration are discussed and simulated to include connection of service to academic objectives, project evaluation, liability issues, public relations, availability of grant money, and celebrations.
Instructor:
Dr. David B. Wangaard will be the instructor for each class. David is the
Executive Director of
the School for Ethical Education (SEE). Prior to earning his doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Northern Colorado, David was a K-12 school principal in Alaska. He has been applying his character education strategies in schools since 1984. Dr. Wangaard has taught junior high and high school math, sponsored student councils and student led community service projects, coached track, co-lead student foreign travel and led summer wilderness canoeing trips. Dr. Wangaard brings these eclectic interests to SEE recognizing how ethics are promoted in a variety of learning environments. David has successfully presented at the national meetings of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Character Education Partnership
(CEP), the National Character Education Convention in St. Louis and the Search Institute's Healthy Communities: Healthy Youth Conference. He is an instructor for SEE courses as well as an adjunct instructor for the University of Bridgeport and the conference coordinator for Connecticut's Assets-Based Character Education Conference. David has also been a site evaluator for
CEP's National Schools of Character Award program
since the program's inception in 1999.
Registration:
The registration fee for each course is
$120.00 and includes 1.0 CEU for each two-day course. One
graduate credit per two-day course is available at an additional cost through the
University of Bridgeport.
