"The American Promise" - PBS broadcasted this three-hour series telling the stories of more than 200 people - of every age and background - who are working to improve their communities across the nation. The program is a wonderful tool for motivating students to get involved in their communities. The Farmers Insurance Group of Companies is now offering teachers free videotapes of the series and a teacher's guide. Contact: The American Promise, P.O. Grants

Grants for Environmental Projects - The Captain Planet Foundation supports environmental education projects that take young people out of the classroom and get them involved in saving the Earth. Any K-12 teacher, school, school district, or non-profit organization is eligible to submit a grant proposal. Grants range from $250 -$2,500. There is no application deadline. Grants for Young People from Do Something - Do Something is a national non-profit organization that provides training, guidance, and grants of up to $500 to young people to help build their communities. Each year's deadlines for grant applications are July 1 and December 1. The Corporation for National Service: www.student-service-awards.org  
Each high school may select two students to receive a $1000 scholarship for outstanding community service ($500 from Corporation for National Service & $500 from the community). Any student in kindergarten through college who serves at least 100 hours of community service in a 12-month period may receive the President's Student Service Award. Students may be certified by a school, community organization, or college.

Up to 100 high school and 100 middle schools are recognized each year for excellence in service-learning. Leader schools asked to help other schools start or improve their service-learning curriculum.
